Sam's hospital birth story
I have chronic hypertension that was under
control for most of my pregnancy. About 6 weeks before my due date
my blood pressure sky-rocketed and I was put on more medication and bed
rest. Three days before my due date I was scheduled to be induced
and so, needless to say, I did not sleep the night before our son was
born. I was too anxious.
Upon arriving at the hospital I was put in a
room with my life-partner and a semi-frequent nurse coming in to check
on us. I had to be there at 7:30 a.m. and at 8:00 they
broke my water. At 9:00 they started the oxytocin and by
10:00 the contractions were 2-3 minutes apart lasting 60-75 seconds. There
was no gentle build up, one minute I was not contracting, the next
minute I was REALLY REALLY contracting! They wanted to monitor my
pressure better so they gave me an epidural -- against my wishes -- and
within two hours I was fully dilated. He was born at 2:58 p.m.
I pushed three times, with a vacuum on my baby's head, and he was out.
The only reason I didn't have an episiotomy was because I had told my OB
prenatally that I would sue him if he cut me.It was the most horrific thing I have ever been through and that is why I am now a doula and helping womyn have the kind of births they would like. I thank the Goddess that breastfeeding went smoothly from day one. Next baby, with a midwife for sure, hopefully at home.
